Boron 10%

Recommended method of application: Broadcast spreader

Material: Granular

This is a granular calcium borate product with 10% boron. It is released slower in the soil than sodium borate, making it less prone to leaching and causing excesses.


The yearly application limit is 20 lbs per acre/year. (2 lbs actual boron)

Copper Sulfate 15% Cu 6% S Granular

Material: Granular

This is a granular copper sulfate product with 15% copper. It is released slower in the soil than the water-soluble copper sulfates, making it less prone to leaching and far less harsh on soil microbiology.


The yearly application limit is 53 lbs per acre/year. (8 lbs actual copper)

Gypsum – Pelletized 21% Ca 16% S

Recommended method of application: Broadcast spreader

Material: Granular (pelletized)

This is a pelletized calcium sulfate (gypsum) product with 21% calcium. Calcium sulfate is a great form of plant-available calcium and sulfate, but note 2 caveats: 1) the calcium is only available once calcium base saturation rises above 60% (perhaps giving you some benefit as low as 50%), and 2) the sulfate in calcium sulfate, as with all sulfates, will NOT increase the sulfur levels on subsequent soil tests (for that, use elemental sulfur), it will only feed the crop and perhaps some the next year.


The yearly application limit is 2,000 lbs per acre/year.


May be allowed for use in organic production – pellets are made with 2% lignosulfonates. Always check with your organic certifier before using any product.

Iron 50% Fe 5% S

Recommended method of application: Broadcast spreader

Material: Granular

This is a granular iron sulfate product with 50% iron. Most soils have lots of iron and deficiencies are usually only seen in high pH soils with poor biological function. Generally, when iron is showing up as deficient, the recommendation is to add a small amount of iron sulfate, 50-100 lbs or so per acre, to feed the crop, until you can get your soil system working better (bring sulfur up to 50-100ppm and increase soil biological activity).


The yearly application limit is 200 lbs per acre/year. (100 lbs actual iron)

Manganese 28% 6% S (Granular)

Material: Granular

This is a granular manganese sulfate product with 28% manganese. While the application limit for this product is 200 lbs per acre/year, it is usually best to apply it more slowly; 50-100 lbs per acre/year being a normal recommended amount.

Nitrate of Soda 16-0-0

Recommended method of application: Broadcast, or localized to the root zone

Material: Granular

This is a granular nitrate of soda (sodium nitrate) product with 16% nitrogen. This product is allowed for organic production in some places, by some certifiers. It should be used sparingly (or not at all if you have high sodium levels, or are still using potassium chloride fertilizer). It does give plants a nice growth boost early season, but be careful about using it too late in the season with fruiting crops (as opposed to leaf crops) as it can delay fruiting and maturity.


Check with your certifier about any potential restrictions on the use of sodium nitrate fertilizer. Always check with your organic certifier before using any product.

This is an organic, granular elemental sulfur product with 90% sulfur. If you have deficient sulfur levels on your soil test, this is the product to fix it (sulfate fertilizers will not increase the stable sulfur levels in your soil, only feed your crops sulfate and eliminate excessive cations).


The yearly application limit is 100 lbs per acre/year. (90 lbs actual sulfur)

Trio Sul-Po-Mag 0-0-22 22% S 11% Mg

Recommended method of application: Broadcast spreader

Material: Granular

This is an organic, granular sulfate of potash-magnesia, sul-po-mag (also known as Kmag, or by the mineral name langbeinite) product with 22% potassium, 22% sulfur (as sulfate), and 11% magnesium. This is a great product if you need potassium and magnesium. It is a more readily available form of potassium than potassium sulfate and slower acting form of magnesium than magnesium sulfate (epsom salt). This product should be used mainly to feed the crop over a season and should be thought of less as a soil mineral balancer (it will add a bit to the potassium and magnesium on a soil test, but is not the most efficient way to build those levels).

Zinc 36% 5% S (Oxysulfate) (Granular)

Material: Granular

This is a granular zinc sulfate product with 36% zinc. Zinc levels should match phosphates levels on a soil test... if you are deficient phosphate, zinc should be on the low side. High phosphates necessitates high zinc levels to keep the system balanced.


The yearly application limit is 35 lbs per acre/year. (12.6 lbs actual zinc)

Greensand

Material: a dusty sand

This is a natural, mined mineral from New Jersey that contains over 30 elements, including around 7% potassium and 12% iron. Greensand has a mineral in it called glauconite, which slowly becomes a form of high-energy clay as soil biology breaks down the greensand. This is how it is possible that greensand is known to both loosen up clay soils and also help to aggregate light, sandy soils. This is a great product for boosting biological function, as that is the only explanation for the increase in nutrient availability post-application... you actually get more minerals showing up on tests of available plant nutrients than there are in the bag. Use anywhere from a few hundred pounds per acre up to 4,000 or more if you need the potassium. Generalized recommendations would be for 200-800 lbs per acre, with smaller annual maintenance applications.

Montmorillonite Clay (PANAK-ITE Trace Minerals)

Recommended method of application: some Broadcast spreaders

Material: dusty 1/8" screened “quarry-run”

This is a natural, mined clay with lots of trace elements (likely all naturally occurring ones, actually). Montmorillonite clays are very “high-energy clays” and have extremely high exchange capacities, so they can hold onto lots of cations. Unlike most “montmorillonite” clays on the market, this one is actual montmorillonite, as opposed to the bentonite clays with relatively less sodium and elevated calcium levels compared to typical bentonite. This would make an excellent additive (in small amounts, 5-10% max) to seed starting mixes, potting soils, compost, or any garden soil (especially sandy ones).

Humates (screened)

Recommended method of application: Broadcast spreader

Material: dusty 1/8" screened

This is a natural, mined humate. Humates are stable organic compounds that provide a physical home to soil microbiology, as well as providing mineral exchange capacity for both cation and anion elements. Furthermore, they likely have some electro-chemical effects that lead to their ability to stimulate biological activity. Humates, as well as a form of biology-feeding carbon (like sugar or molasses) should always be applied when applying nitrogen, and is a good idea when applying trace element fertilizers (or any fertilizers), as the humates can help to buffer the harsh effects of fertilizers on soil biology. Apply 25-150 lbs per acre/per year.

Wollastonite Tailings

Recommended method of application: Drop spreader, or some Broadcast spreaders

Material: dusty 10-mesh, course powder

This is a natural, mined calcium silicate material. It is a tailings product from a calcium silicate mine so the wollastonite content will vary but should be around 20% (but no guarantees). The other minerals in the wollastonite tailings are also potentially valuable though, as generic “rock dust” materials (calcium-rich rock dust). Calcium silicate provides both calcium and plant-available silica. There is increasing evidence that silicon-deficiency is an under-appreciated issue in farming today. Amending with calcium silicate has been shown to help prevent powdery mildew, so it's worth giving this material a try. Apply 500-2000 lbs per acre (assuming you need the calcium), with smaller maintenance applications thereafter, but make sure you don't apply too much calcium.

Potassium Sul-Po-Mag Sulfur

This is a blend of sulfate of potash (potassium sulfate), sul-po-mag, and elemental sulfur. This is intended to be used when you have a deficiency in potassium, especially when magnesium is low (although due to the fact that high magnesium can lower the availability of both potassium and magnesium, this product is still useful to feed crops on high-mag soils).
